Stop Emailing a Lead with Do Not Email

Updated September 17, 2026·Following Up·Share on X

Sometimes you never want the system to email a lead. Maybe they work for a competitor, maybe a colleague already owns the relationship, or maybe they asked your team directly to stop. Do Not Email is an internal block you set on the lead so no campaign, follow-up, or one-to-one email can reach them.

How to mark a lead Do Not Email

  1. Open the lead and click Edit (or use the edit form from the leads table).
  2. Find the Do Not Email setting.
  3. Switch it to Yes. The default is No, which means the lead can receive email.
  4. Optionally add a short reason, like "Competitor", so your team knows why.
  5. Save.

Once saved, a red Do Not Email banner shows at the top of the lead's detail drawer so anyone on the team can see the block at a glance.

What it blocks

Turning Do Not Email on stops every outbound email the platform could send to that lead:

  • They are excluded from new campaign audiences and cannot be added as a recipient.
  • Any active sequence they are already in stops, and pending sends are cancelled.
  • AI follow-up drafts skip them entirely.
  • One-to-one emails from the composer are blocked.

Meetings a lead books themselves through a booking link still send their own confirmation, because the lead asked for that.

Do Not Email vs. Unsubscribe

These look similar but mean different things:

  • Unsubscribe is the lead's own choice to opt out of your marketing email. It is a compliance record.
  • Do Not Email is your team's internal decision to never email this person, whatever the reason.

Both block sending. Keeping them separate means your unsubscribe list stays a clean record of who opted out, while Do Not Email captures the people you chose to hold back.

Turning it back off

Switch Do Not Email back to No on the lead to allow email again. This does not re-enroll the lead into any campaign - you add them back yourself when you are ready. Every change is recorded on the lead's activity timeline.
